Tree pruning isn't necessarily a year-round job. In many cases, this work is best done in the winter months. Why?
Trees Are Dormant in Winter
If you prune a tree during the late spring, summer, and early fall months, then the tree will still be in growth mode. This isn't necessarily the right time to cosmetically prune most trees.
If you prune during this stage of the tree's cycle, then you might damage it. For example, if you remove branches, then you stimulate the tree to produce new growth. This can put the tree under a lot of stress, especially in the hot summer months.
Plus, if you prune in autumn, then the tree might have an unexpected growth spurt. If this happens, then the tree might not enter its dormancy stage as it should. If it doesn't become dormant over winter, then its health might suffer.
If you prune in winter or early spring, then your tree will be dormant. It won't try to regrow pruned parts, and you're less likely to cause damage.
The tree will have time to recover from its pruning. When the weather warms up and the tree moves out of dormancy, it will start its natural growth cycle. It won't be over-stressed but will naturally compensate for the work you did earlier.
Trees Are Easier to Prune in Winter
Pruning can improve the way trees look and the way they grow. However, you won't always find it easy to make these improvements during warmer seasons.
For example, it can be hard to judge the shape of a tree in summer when its foliage is heavy and in full bloom. Its leaves will get in the way. Even with experienced help, the job will take longer and create more waste.
If you prune in winter when the tree has shed its leaves, then you can see its branches and its shape more clearly. You can accurately prune it to give it a better shape or to encourage it to grow in a healthier and more attractive way.
Keep in mind that there are some exceptions to the winter-pruning rule. Some trees should be pruned at different times, say in spring or autumn. Trees with problems such as dead branches, decay, or insect infestations might need to be pruned immediately to make them safe.
If you need tree pruning services, then contact a professional. They can advise you on the best time to do this work depending on the type of tree and its condition.
